Unknown Shirley
Frederick Scanlon

*Update 2014. Thanks to Samantha for solving
the riddle of this unknown soldier (not a Shirley!)

Just like to let you know that the “unknown Shirley soldier” is Frederick Scanlon. He was my grandfather’s brother and was born in Bohermore, Bagenalstown, Co Carlow. He was killed in action 23rd November 1917. The same photo is on the North Irish Horse on http://northirishhorse.com.au/NIH/Images/
In%20memoriam/Full%20pictures/Scanlon.html

His parents are James & Sophia Scanlon (nee Collier). Not sure of any Shirley connection but would have been friends of the Family.

Update 2017 Thanks to Sylvia for the following: Caroline Sarah Collier (1874-1947) married James Shirley in 1900. Caroline's sister was Sophia Scanlon (nee Collier), wife of James Scanlon, who were Fred's parents. So James Shirley was Fred Scanlon's uncle, by marriage.
