2(iv). Robert Shirley
, born about. 1770, Frederick County, Virginia; He died 1836, Williams County, Ohio. Robert Shirley sold the Jefferson County land inherited from his father on April 1, 1808 to John Zuber for $1,248.75 (Jefferson Co. Will Book 4, Page 528). A short biography of Robert appears at page 389 in Vol. I of "Valley of the Upper Maumee River," (1889): Shirleys of Defiance and Williams Co Ohio

In the spring of 1822 Robert Shirley, Sr., and family moved from near Chillicothe, Ohio, to Fort Defiance. The family included the mother, Mrs. Rachel Shirley, and the children, James, Elias, Robert, Ruth, Mary, Nancy and John G. From Fort Jennings to Fort Defiance they saw no white people, and followed the Indian trail along the river Auglaize. The fort at Defiance, built by Gen. Winchester, was then standing, in a good state of preservation, in charge of William Preston, the only other inhabitant of Defiance. Four French families lived in cabins on the Maumee above the point, and three American families on the Auglaize near by. Six miles below lived the families of John Perkins, Montgomery Evans and Mr. Hively. Two trading houses were kept on either side of the Maumee. Here the Ottawa, commonly called Tawah Indians, brought their skins of the otter, beaver, raccoon, bear, muskrat, mink, fox, wild-cat and deer, and beeswax, ginseng, cranberries and gooseberries. No person then lived between Forts Wayne and Defiance, but all the travel from Detroit to Fort Wayne and Chicago passed along the Maumee. Mail was carried by Forts Wayne and Defiance from Piqua to Fort Meigs (Maumee City). When the Shirleys settled at Defiance, Cant. James Riley had not begun the survey of land. Shane, the famous pioneer, was then about fifty years old, and living at Shane's prairie, on the St. Maiy's river. Flour and salt were obtained from Swan Creek (Toledo), hauled to the Rapids and brought thence on pirogues. In 1827, through the influence of Nathan Shirley, Elias Pattee, of a family familiar in church history in the Maumee valley, organized the first church at Defiance.

married 1) Mary Minear on 15 April 1819 in Ross County, Ohio; She was born 8 January 1800; She died October 1844 in Williams County, Ohio

Email: Nathan was married to Mary Minear and after she died Nathan remarried. According to the information you have on your page his second wife was Ann Price Hawkins. I would like to let you know that this is a common transcribtion error. Nathan's second wife was actually Ann Price Hankins. Ann Price Hankins was married to Samuel Hankins and after he died she married Nathan Shirley as they were both widowers. Ann's maiden name was Gullik. Ann's daugther was named Eliza Jane Hankins and she is part of my family because she married Lester D. Newton. Nathan's son Stephen M. Shirley is also part of my family because he married Estella Newton. Stephen fought in the Civil War for the Ohio 25th Infantry and he lost his left foot in The Battle of Potter's Raid. - Matt Newton

He received but a limited education in the old field schools of that day and spent his boyhood on tho farm. Liter, at his own expense, he attended school and prepared himself for teaching. He taught many terms with good success, and during that time married Miss Mary E. Ward, of Franklin county, who was also a teacher. She was the daughter of Lewis Ward, who located in Paulding county in 1854. Abandoning teaching, Mr. Shirley purchased land and began farming it. Later, he sold this land and embarked in merchandising, which he continued for thirteen years with good success. In 1876 ho again turned his attention to farming and erected the first building in what is now Melrose. Here he purchased a general stock of goods and was soon afterward appointed agent for the Nickel Plate railroad at his place. He then became agent for the American express company, which positions he is still holding. In connection with these positions Mr. Shirley deals in tobacco and cigars. He is one of the self-made men of the county and is a man of much prominence in the community. Dear father,

I take this opportunity to write you a few lines. We ar all well at present and hope these few lines will find you and family all enjoying the comforts and blessings of life. It has been some time since I have recd a letter from you. We are having a very nice fall. It was very dry here this season. We only had three showers here during the growing season. Two of them was chintz bugs, the last was grasshoper. Our crops were almost an entire failure this year. Some of the western people are bound to suffer this winter for they have no grain of any kind. Some have plenty of Hogs to poor to sell for meat and no market for them, some of my neighbors are trying to give their Hogs away and can't find anyone that wants or will have them, their is some counties that is south and west of us that are entirely destitute of anything and are sure to suffer with cold and hunger - ere long before spring. I heard from Brother Will last week They were all well then Mr Irwin and wife Angies father and Mother was down to make us a visit they live at Sidney, Iowa, they have made us one visit a year since we moved to Nebraska, and you have not made us one visit in 8 years. I cant help but think you ar treating us rather cool. I thought that last spring and all summer that I would be able to this fall to go and see sister nan, and then spend the winter in Ohio among friends but since I gather in my crops I find I will have enough to do and stay home. I have not heard from Stephen and Nancy since in July they were complaining of bugs and dry weather. Come with your family and see us if you Possibly can.----If you don't come send me a good long letter. I would like to know what the boys and girls are all doing. This is beautiful country, I would rather live here than anyplace I have seen between Ohio and New Mexico. Come and see us
