Elizabeth Shirley (nee
Shirley) |
married Elizabeth Shirley on 26 July 1855 at the Danesfort
Catholic Parish Church; She was James Shirley's cousin, the daughter of John Shirley
of Burnchurch. Born about 1837, age 74 in the 1911 census;
She died in 1912, age 86 (obituary)
ESTATES OF 200-350 ACRES in 1850 - Twelve Iandlords longed
to this category. Possessing 3226 acres between them!... Another
landowner in this category was Thomas Shirley Esq. The Shirley
family have a very interesting family history. Tom Shirley's
mother (nee Shirley) was the lady proto-martyr of Agrarian agitation
in Ireland. Her own family had held the fertile and extensive
Floodhall Estate at Burnchurch. They were evicted and vehicles
loaded with furniture, farm implements, straw, unthrashed Corn
and Hay arrived at the Shirley farmhouse and a hostile crowd
was attracted. All inflammable articles! Criminal proceedings
were promptly taken by the authorities and at the ensuing Kilkenny
assizes of the prisoners indicted Mrs Shirley, her brother James
and Doran a ploughman, were convicted and sentenced to long terms
of transportation to the Australian penal Colonies. However,
Miss Shirley was detained in an Irish prison. Spike Island. After
a year the Lord Lieutenant remitted her sentence. Holohan, the
then occupier of Floodhall in fear, relinquished his claim on
the Shirley farm. After her release from prison Miss Shirley
married her namesake. The late Mr James Shirley of Garrynaman
House Kells. He was for many years an active and useful member
of the Callan Board of Guardian and was also prominent in every
local movement. He was a charitable and philanthropic character.
He was unopposed in his election to the Coronership of South
Kilkenny. Mrs Shirley delighted in encouraging and promoting
social festivities, such as athletics, sports, cricket and football,
generously giving the use of ground for competitions, play and
practice in all seasons of the year. (Sent by Liam Jan

Analysis of a 1912 newspaper item naming
mourners at the funeral of Elizabeth Shirley, wife of Coronor
James Shirley (see above)
1912 June 8 - Kilkenny Moderator [newspaper snippet] [referring
to death of Eliz Shirley of Garrynaman].....chief morners were:
Thomas and Richard Shirley (sons); Susan Shirley (daughter);
Mary (grand-daughter); Mrs M. J Walsh (niece); James and Henry
Shirley (grand sons); Michael Shirley (nephew); Kathleen Shirley
(daughter in law); Mrs W. L Claxton (niece)
Mourners were, by definition, physically present at the funeral
of Elizabeth Shirley. They were not living in Tasmania or in
the United States at the time - as so many of Elizabeth's relatives
were in 1912
Named in the Newspaper:
1. Thomas Shirley (son)
Identify confirmed. From the lineage shown above: Thomas
J. Shirley baptised 15 December 1855 at Danesfort
Catholic Church, son of James Shirley and Elizabeth Shirley of
Garnaman; He was the informant "son" for the
death certificate of his father; He was age 38 in mother's 1901
census household, age 46 (sic) in 1911 family census, single,
farmer; Roman Catholic; He died in July 1929. He was a bachelor,
age 70 at the time.
2. Richard Shirley (son)
Identify confirmed. From the lineage shown above: Richard
Joseph Shirley born 19 January 1862 Garnaman House,
Kells, Kilkenny. Age 31 in mother Elizabeth Shirley's 1901 census
household. He was single, age 35 (sic) in the family's 1911 census
household, farmer, Roman Catholic; He died 23 May 1935, age 71.
3. Susan Shirley (daughter)
Identify confirmed. From the lineage shown above: Susan
Shirley born 17 June 1867 to James Shirley, farmer
of Garrynaman Kilkenny and Eliza Shirley (nee Shirley), age 27
(sic) in 1901 census, age 32 in 1911 family census, single; She
entered the USA through Ellis Island in 1913 age 48 (sic), store
keeper, to visit (or live with?) her brother William Shirley
who was living in Brooklyn NY. She returned to Ireland and died
at Garnaman Kells on 21 September 1929.
4. Mary Shirley (grand-daughter)
Identity confirmed. Mary Shirley is age 13 living in
the 1901 census household of Elizabeth Shirley "grandaughter"
born Kilkenny; Mary Shirley is age 22 living in the 1911 census
household of Elizabeth Shirley born Adelaide (Australia). This
birthplace identifies her as the daughter of James Shirley and
wife Jennie Shirley of Hobart Tasmania (dau of James and Eliz
Shirley of Garrynaman), born there on 19 May 1890.
5. Mrs M. J. Walsh (neice)
Her identity is likely confirmed (more evidence desired).
Sarah Shirley, daughter of Thomas Shirley esq of Tullemain,
Kilkenny and wife Catherine Nowlan married Martin John Walsh
in 1866 at Dansfort Catholic Church. If
"niece" is correct, then this would mean Thomas Shirley
esq of Tullemain would be a previously unidentified son of Thomas
Shirley esq of Garrynaman Kells (Note: a daughter of
Thomas Shirley esq of Garrynaman named Jane Shirley married James
Walsh in 1839, thus their Walsh surnamed children would also
be neices and nephews of Elizabeth Shirley (d 1912). However,
one of their daughters couldn't then be "Mrs" M J Walsh,
unless she also married a Walsh)
6. James Shirley (grand son)
He is unidentified. There are no sons of Elizabeth
Shirley who are residents of Kilkenny in 1912 with a child named
James Shirley (Daughter Jennie Shirley (nee Shirley) had a
son named James, but he was born in Tasmania. Is he visiting
his sister Mary Shirley in Kilkenny in 1912?)
7. Henry Shirley (grand son)
He is unidentified. There are no sons of Elizabeth
Shirley who are residents of Kilkenny in 1912 with a child named
Henry Shirley (Daughter Jennie Shirley (nee Shirley) had a
son named Henry, but he was born in Tasmania. Is he visiting
his sister Mary Shirley in Kilkenny in 1912?)
8. Michael Shirley (nephew)
His identity is yet confirmed. There is a Michael Shirley
age 42 in the 1901 census household of Jeffery Comerford and
wife Mary Jane (she was nee Shirley). Residents of Rathduff which
is adjacent to Garrynaman Kells. Michael was identified as "brother
in law" (thus brother of Mary Jane Comerford). In 1911 census
he was enumerated in Rathduff, age 65 (sic) in the household
of his neice Mary Ellen Comerford (later married W. L Claxton).
(A significant stray Shirley family are residents of Rathduff.
John Shirley esq who married Catherine Shorthall, held large
parcels of land once lost by other Shirleys thru debt. Is John
Shirley esq of Rathduff an previously unidentified son of Thomas
Shirley esq of Garrynaman?)
9. Kathleen Shirley (daughter in
law)
She is unidentified. There is no son of Elizabeth Shirley
who had a wife named Kathleen. (Maybe she is the new
bride of son Richard, Catherine Brennan? Maybe Kathleen is a
typo for Catherine?)
10. Mrs W. L. Claxton (neice)
Her identity is confirmed, but "neice" is problematic
- Mary Jane Shirley who married Jeffrey Comerford (residents
of Rathduff in 1901 census) and sister of Michael Shirley (listed
above), had a child Mary Ellen Comerford who married W L Claxton
prior to 1912 death of Elizabeth Shirley, thus she would be "Mrs
W. L Claxton" (possibly a grand niece, not niece?)
